Web Design & Digital Illustration
The Project
The Apple Tree bills itself as an unconventional neighbourhood pub, and the brief called for a site with the same energy: bold, maximalist, and built around original artwork rather than stock photography.
We produced a hand-composed digital illustration as the centrepiece of the design: a dense, theatrical collage that carries the venue's identity across the homepage and through to every other page.
Around it, we built a clean, dark, gold-accented site structure covering spaces, events, menus and the people behind the venue, with a mailing list integration to keep regulars in the loop.

Key Deliverables
01
A sprawling hand-composed illustration built from dozens of layered assets, used as the site's visual signature across the homepage and key pages.
02
A dark, gold-accented design built around the illustration work rather than a template, reflecting the venue's unconventional, maximalist identity.
03
Spaces, menus, events and booking information structured for a venue that runs private hire alongside its everyday food and drink offering.
Our Approach
Most sites start with a grid and add imagery afterwards. Here we did the opposite: the illustration came first, and the layout was built to hold it without competing with it.
Getting a single, richly detailed piece of artwork to load quickly and scale cleanly across devices took careful image optimisation, so the visual impact never comes at the cost of performance.
